what you fail to realize is that video games shouldn’t cater to females in the first place. It’s largely known that it’s targeted towards the MALE demographic and has been for so many years, so why would they ask for something like that to be handed to them on a goddamn silver platter?
that’s like a guy walking into the women’s department of clothing at a sears and demanding that there be more clothing for men there. Separation of sections be damned.
that’s not how it fucking works

no not really
the game industry is more like walking into a regular department store and seeing that all the clothes are only men’s clothes
and when you ask the cashier where the women’s clothing section is, they wheel out a small rack of cheaply made tutus, g-strings, and high heels all in bright pink
and then when you go “wow really that’s it” you get called an uppity bitch and everybody assumes you want all the focus on you when in reality you’d just like to be considered a worthwhile demographic since you also like to wear clothes, it’s not like you want some ridiculous getup, you just want a solid shirt and pair of pants that fits you alright.
I mean hell you even sort of like men’s clothes and you have no problem wearing them. They suit you well. But it’s very obvious once you throw on a pair of men’s pants that they were not made for you.

Perfect metaphor is perfect.

I’ll have to add commentary when I’m not in class…

okay, thoughts on that mustache post

fromonesurvivortoanother:

(original post here)

  1. I thought the word “kitsch” would make it clear that I was talking about (“hipster”) fake mustaches and performance, not grown hair. Obviously I was wrong in that assumption (and it is not okay for me to be angry at people for not knowing what “kitsch” means. It could be pretty obscure). I probably should have linked the original post I was referring to in the tags as well to give it more context. My fault.
  2. I should have been precise and specifically said that my post was about cis white women only (the only group I’ve seen besides the occasional Asian woman who actually does this thing with fake mustaches).
  3. I know that Women of Color, particularly Black and Latina women, get a lot of shit for appearing “masculine”, and I am really sorry for hurting people by not being more specific with my wording. Femininity in itself is a concept that’s already slanted towards white and Asian women— I am sure that this is why Black trans women tend to face more violence than other trans women. This thought did cross my mind, but I didn’t catch myself in it and make myself take a moment to edit/reread what I had written before posting (which says a lot about my own privilege). I am super sorry for this.
  4. Cis women who get crap for having prominent facial hair? That’s transmisogyny, misogyny, and sometimes racism. And again, I was talking about fake mustaches, not grown facial hair.
  5. I still stand by my opinion that white cis women using fake mustaches is a HUGE indicator of how much privilege they have. You experience sexism but your femininity is generally (not entirely, i never said that in the OP) unquestioned to a point where you can actually bend the rules and have it be cute, sexy, or ironic. This kind of performance is hinged upon the idea that facial hair on women is deviant, weird, etc., which affects trans women and all women who deal with facial hair.
  6. Someone mentioned that maybe women could grow facial hair as a means of reclaiming space/fighting back against body policing…that’s fine with me and none of my business to decide.
  7. White cis women replying with photos of themselves with fake mustaches…yeah fuck you. Basically illustrating #5 for me by flaunting your privilege and being cis scum. I hope you fall into a pit of legos.

Thoughts On “The Hawkeye Initiative” (#transmisogyny #rape)

girlinfourcolors:

Artists: Lauren Armstrong (left) & Kenneth Rocafort (right)

Disclaimers may be in order.

First, I hate everything. It’s seriously the first thing out of my friends’ mouths when I’m done speaking to them. “Ceridwen, why do you hate everything?” Let’s just get that out of the way so I don’t have an inbox full of similar notes when I’m done with this. (What am I saying, people don’t read this blog.)

Second, I understand the intent behind The Hawkeye Initiative. The work that the management is busy with, drawing attention to the sexism inherent in mainstream comics art, is good work. It’s important that more people do this work, and on that level, I wish them success.

The Hawkeye Initiative has been live for about a week now, and the response has been incredible. Quite literally, in fact: It strains credibility to think how quickly this project has taken off. In seven days, the blog has been featured on io9, ONTD, Bleeding Cool, and Know Your Meme.

By comparison, Escher Girls, which has been doing the work of highlighting the sheer amount of sexist art in comics for over a year now, still doesn’t have the following that The Hawkeye Initiative has built in the last seven days.  In the interests of full disclosure, the woman behind Escher Girls is a personal friend, but I want to be clear this isn’t a case of envy-by-proxy. I’m more interested in exploring why this discrepancy exists.

My take? People care more about issues of sexual exploitation if that exploitation directly effects men. We see this time and time again in our day-to-day lives. The sexual abuse of young men and boys makes national news, and the narrative surrounding them explores the psychological damage caused by their abuse. “What he might have gone on to achieve” is a common refrain in these stories. Meanwhile, the narrative surrounding the sexual abuse of young women ignores all of this in favor of finding some way in which her rape and abuse was her fault. Even in cases that avoid this trope, such as (most, though not all cases of) the abuse of underage girls, “what she might have gone on to achieve” is never even considered.

While objectification is not as “serious” as rape, it remains a contributing factor in rape culture. So when that culture sees an instance of a man being objectified, even if that objectification is meant to draw attention to similar treatment of women, it reacts in ways it does not when the subject is female. As I said before, Escher Girls has been highlighting this issue for over a year now, but the focus has remained solely on how this issue effects women. Ami provides smart commentary, her readers have contributed redraws showing ways in which the art can not only be less objectifying but objectively better, and the focus remains on women. The Hawkeye Initiative, meanwhile, shifts the focus to a male character, and in so doing, draws the attention of our male-dominated culture.

And that’s assuming the best intentions of the management and their contributors. Go through the archives and count how many times a variation of “This is hilarious, I had to contribute” is used. Be careful here, friends. There’s some intense ugliness hidden behind why you find this so hilarious, and it’s steeped in misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia.

On tumblr, polerin elaborates:

There’s some really nasty shit lurking not too far under the surface of some of the drawings. In some cases, like the ones where they switch clothes, it’s not even too deep.

Making choices of clothing based in femininity/femme-ness on a dood isn’t a context free choice. Doubly so when you are mocking something. It relies on the deep history of cissexism and oppositional sexism in our culture. Even if that’s not the intent of the artist, it is impossible to look at these drawings and not have all the jokes about guys wearing women’s clothing or “acting like a girl” come up. That’s the POINT of these drawings.

And that point pins trans women to the wall as a side effect of (rightly) critiquing the sexism in comics.

Despite the best of intentions, the vibe comes across as really anti-femme, anti-trans women, and ultimately, anti-women. After all, if we’re unable to talk about the mistreatment of women without bringing men into the picture, what does that really say about us? If we’re unable to talk about the mistreatment of women without considering how it effects all women, what does that really say about us?

The Trevor Project has given an award to Katy Perry. Yes, you read that correctly. The Trevor Project, the organization whose aim is to prevent LGBTQ youth suicide, is giving an award to Katy Perry to honor her for “inspiring LGBTQ youth to find their spark through her video ‘Firework’” and ”increasing visibility and understanding of the LGBTQ community.”
I wonder which acts of visibility and understanding they’re referring to exactly. Was it the time she made heaps of money for celebrating the stereotype that girls kissing girls is an act done for attention? You know, the song Kathleen Hanna called “straight-up offensive,” P!nk said “trivializes lesbianism” and Beth Ditto noted was indicative of Perry ”just riding on the backs of our culture, without having to pay any of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all”?
Or was it the time she peppered a song with effeminate gay male stereotypes so she could insult an ex-boyfriend, equating queerness with negativity and encouraging bullying against gay people? Did the fact that she opened that song with the lines “I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf /While jacking off listening to Mozart” really seal the deal for a LGBTQ youth suicide prevention group?
Maybe it was the time she talked about looking like a “tranny” in Rolling Stone? Or when she mocked trans* people on twitter, inspiring a condemnation from GLAAD? Those don’t seem like moments when queer visibility was improved, nor were they stellar examples of helping other to “understand” our community any better. Those seem like moments when some homophobia slipped through the cracks, and no one listened when queers called it out. After all, Perry herself has declared that “certain parts of the world — especially in the U.S. — are just dying to be offended” and that it “won’t change how I express myself as an artist.”
Being pissed off at Katy Perry isn’t anything new for the queer community, which is why it seems strange for us to be giving her some kind of award, although it’s certainly not the first time we’ve been baffled by Perry’s inclusion and celebration in a queer space. In 2008, Perry made the cover of the OUT 100, earning the coveted honor of “Musician of the Year,” inspiring lesbian entertainment blogger Dorothy Snarker to ask OUT, “What the fuck? Katy Perry? Katy fucking Perry? This is a joke, right? What you meant to do was pick an actual lesbian to pose amid the gay men, right? Right?”

TRIGGER WARNING: cissexism. Biological functions are not privilege.

aboutmaleprivilege:

Stop it.

Your period is not male privilege. It’s not sexism. Hygiene products being priced highly is privilege/having your emotions dismissed because of it/things along those lines are privilege, but the act itself is not.

Stop submitting this stupid shit. I’ve had to delete at least two submissions like this today.

image

“Male privilege is not bleeding once a month for an entire week!”

“Male privilege is not having a period!”

-Redd

Seriously guys. Also, remember that some men do have periods. I still have one. I’m on my period right fucking now and that doesn’t make me less of a man. Saying it’s male privilege to not have a period is not only stupid, but you are dismissing the whole trans* community with that statement by leaving out the trans* men that have periods and the trans* women that don’t (because you imply they are men because they don’t have a period).

That’s cissexist behavior and I am really not in the mood for dealing with that shit today.

SO STOP.

Dear Lady Gaga,
The more I learn about you, the worse it gets.
First, you allowed “Born This Way” to be played and performed without the line about supporting people regardless of their sexual and/or gender identities.  This was especially ironic considering that this song was supposedly written as a “gay anthem.”
Then, there are all the times you have made transmisogynistic comments.  Although I strongly believe that gender policing is unacceptable, I don’t think you have handled these situations appropriately, to say the least.  You can’t combat transphobia with transmisogyny.
Now, my dashboard is full of posts about your recent performance in New Zealand, in which you used a wheelchair as part of your costume.  As “Jesse Billauer, the founder of the quadriplegic advocacy group Life Rolls On,” rightfully said: ”I invite [Gaga] to learn more about the 5.6 million Americans who live with paralysis. They, like me, unfortunately, don’t use a wheelchair for shock value.”
Let’s not forget that time you equated feminism with man hating, as if loving men and being a feminist were mutually exclusive.
Because you are such a famous celebrity, your comments and actions are extremely significant.  Each time you express transphobic, ableist, and anti-feminist sentiments, you are sending a message to the world.  You are reinforcing the dominant ideologies which allow for the marginalization and oppression of the groups you claim to support. It seems that every time you take one step forward, you take two steps backwards.
P.S. You are not, and will never be, the face of the LGBTQ community. Please stop referring to us as “the gays.” I do not find it particularly endearing or complimentary; in fact, I find your comments to be rather trivializing and offensive.

This doesn’t even get into her most recent stunt where in she wore a hot pink, see through, burqa.

WHY I HATE BRONIES - Trigger warning for racism, queer bigotry, cissexism, trans bigotry, fat shaming, sexism, sexist slurs, sexual harassment, ableism and ablest slurs

  • Bronies when around other white, cis, able-bodied straight males: LOVE AND TOLERANCE EVERYONE!
  • Bronies when seeing fanart of humanized ponies as poc: WHY DID YOU MAKE TWILIGHT SPARKLE BLACK? SHE DOESN’T SOUND BLACK. SHE DOESN’T LOOK SO PRETTY WHEN SHE’S BLACK. CAN YOU REMAKE THE ART WHERE SHE’S WHITE INSTEAD? BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T I’M GOING TO HAVE TO GIVE THIS ARTWORK A THUMBSDOWN. I DON’T CARE IF IT’S ACTUALLY REALLY WELL DRAWN OR NOT. I’M NOT RACIST, I SWEAR! I JUST DON’T THINK ANY OF THE PONIES SHOULD BE PEOPLE OF COLOR. CAN’T YOU BE HAPPY WITH ZECORA? AND THE BUFFALOS? SHUT THE FUCK UP, THAT AIN’T STEREOTYPING. WHY DO YOU GOTTA MAKE THIS ABOUT RACE? I PERSONALLY DON’T SEE IT.
  • Bronies when seeing male slash: WHY ARE THOSE TWO MALE PONIES KISSING IN THIS PIC? THAT’S FUCKING GROSS. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? THIS A KID’S SHOW, WHAT YOU’RE DOING IS INAPROPPIATE. LOOK I SUPPORT THE GAYS GETTING MARRIED AND ALL BUT IF THERE AIN’T HOT WHITE CHICKS MAKING OUT THAN I AIN’T INTERESTED. THIS IS A CARTOON ANYWAYS; CHILDREN AREN’T READY FOR GAY COUPLES ON THEIR SHOWS.
  • Bronies when seeing people say they want Fluttershy to be a transwoman: EWWWW WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THAT FLUTTERSHY SHOULD BE TRANS? THAT’S DISGUSTING AND SICK; THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU. DON’T YOU KNOW THAT’S A MENTAL ILLNESS? DON’T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT WOULD CORRUPT AND TRAMUTIZE KIDS IF FLUTTERSHY ACTUALLY HAD A DICK? OMG. AND WHY DID YOU DRAW YOUR HUMAN VERSIONS WITH MAN-ISH FEATURES? I’M CRITIZING THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR ART BECAUSE OF THAT.
  • Bronies when seeing fanart of chubby Pinkie Pie: PINKIE PIE ISN’T FAT DON’T DRAW HER HUMAN FORM THAT WAY. NOW YOU JUST MADE HER LOOK UGLY. HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO FAP TO THAT?
  • Bronies when being asked not to touch the female cosplayers without their permission: WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? WHY WON’T THOSE HOT COSPLAYERS LET ME GROPE THEM WHEN THEY DO PHOTOSHOOTS? WHAT A BUNCH OF PRISSY CUNTS. IT’S A COMPLIMENT WHEN I DO THAT! THEY SHOULD DEFIANTLY BE MORE APPRECIAITIVE. OH, LAURA FAUST IS A FEMINIST? I DON’T SEE WHAT THAT HAS TO DO WITH THIS. IT’S NOT LIKE I’M TELLING THEM TO GO BACK TO THE KITCHEN OR SOMETHING. GOD, YOU’RE ALL A BUNCH OF MISANDRIC BITCHES! WHAT ABOUT US GUYS? WE SUFFER TOO!
  • Bronies when they see people being hurt by the idea of "Derpy Hooves": I HONESTLY DON’T SEE WHAT’S SO OFFENSIVE ABOUT DERPY HOOVE’S CHARACTER. WHAT THE HELL IS ABLEISM ANYWAY? SOUNDS MADE UP TO ME. WHY CAN’T YOU GUYS BE HAPPY THAT YOU GOT A DISABLED CHARACTER ON MLP? ISN’T THAT REPRESENTATION? WHY'D YOU HAVE TO CENSOR HER? MAYBE YOU GUYS ARE THE “ABLESTS”! SAVE DERPY EVERYONE!
  • Bronies when they're called out on their bullshit: HOLY SHIT LIFE IS SO HARD WHEN YOU’RE A BRONY. YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA. WHY CAN’T PEOPLE JUST LET ME LOVE A CHILDREN’S CARTOON? :’( I’M SO OPPRESSED AND MISUNDERSTOOD! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

Ah.  I was wondering why I was getting messages from bronies again.

Apparently this brony who performs at brony cons made a rap about how I should be murdered because I had an opinion regarding a certain fictional pony.  Please sign the linked petition to ban him from performing.  Even if you personally don’t like me, he’s preaching a hateful, transphobic and homophobic message.

And people wonder why “bronies” have a bad name. If you consider yourself a brony and don’t want to be lumped in with guys like this, this is your chance to set yourself apart from the dregs of the fandom who support intolerance, hate and violence.

Hi, breaking the silence here to say that if you haven’t signed this, maybe consider doing so?
